NVIDIA opens Vera Rubin architecture specifications to the Open Compute Project

What happened.NVIDIA contributed its Vera Rubin rack and compute tray blueprints to the Open Compute Project under the MGX 1.2 open standard. The release opens proprietary physical designs to third-party server manufacturers building gigawatt AI data centers.
Why it matters.Opening mechanical and power specifications prevents cloud vendors from locking data centers into bespoke cooling hardware. Founders procuring private clusters will see faster delivery times and lower facility retrofitting costs as contract manufacturers build identical open racks.
The technical specifications:
- Hardware: Compute trays eliminate internal fans and cables, using direct liquid cooling and 5,000-amp busbars.
- Power density: Standard rack enclosures support thermal envelopes up to 250 kilowatts per rack.
- Adoption: Meta, ASUS, and Vertiv committed to deploying Vera Rubin reference chassis alongside Spectrum-6 network fabrics.
