What happened.GitLab released emergency security updates 19.4.2, 19.3.5, and 19.2.8 for Community and Enterprise Editions. The update fixes an unauthenticated remote code execution flaw in its pipeline regular expression compiler.

Why it matters.Attackers can seize self-managed build servers directly from the public internet without login credentials. Engineering teams hosting their own GitLab instances should apply the patch now or restrict web portal access to private corporate networks.

The technical specifications:

  • Vulnerability: An integer overflow lets network attackers run arbitrary system commands without authentication using crafted pipeline configuration files.
  • Affected versions: The bug impacts self-managed instances running releases 19.1 through 19.4.1, while GitLab.com and Dedicated hosts are already patched.
  • Remediation: System administrators must install the updated packages immediately because no configuration workaround exists.
